The premise

The dragon is dead. Dawnbreak Hall glitters for the victory feast — yet the kingdom-wide quest banner overhead still reads SLAY THE TYRANT (0/1), and the reward-vault will not open until it ticks. Then, as the first toast is poured, Guildmaster Aldous Crane is found dead in his study — and the banner flips to 1/1. The vault booms open. The Crown's notary demands a name by midnight, or the whole guild hangs together for regicide-by-quest. Someone in this hall completed the quest. Now decide: was it even a crime?

The cast

Aldous Crane

Victim NPC

Founder and guildmaster of Dawnbreak Company: silver-maned, expansive, the man who held the Dawnmarch together through ten years of dragonfire. Tonight was to be his coronation as the kingdom's savior. Instead he is…

Serah Voss

Suspect

Quartermaster of Dawnbreak Company. A war-widow from the burned village of Marrowbrook, she keeps the guild fed, shod, and solvent; every key in the fortress hangs from her belt. Steady hands, ledger-straight — the…

Bram Kettle

Suspect

Bram 'Lastblow' Kettle, Dawnbreak's vanguard breaker — the axe that landed the killing blow on the dragon, and the loudest voice in the hall about it. The kill-credit read 'Shared — Party' and he has spent the week…

Odo Finch

Suspect

Dawnbreak's treasurer: fussy, exact, the man who turned a mercenary outfit's plunder into ledgers, pensions, and premiums. He counts everything twice and pays late.

Yrix

Suspect

Scalemonger Yrix, relic-merchant and open dragon-cultist of the Sundered Scale, tolerated because his relics sell and his coin is good. He has spent the feast insisting, serenely, that the dragon is not dead — that it…

Sir Calloway

Witness

An oath-warden paladin attached to the Crown Adjudicature. His order's gift is oath-sense: every death within a league rings on his soul as LAWFUL or UNLAWFUL, and in thirty years it has never once erred. He has not…

Imogen Hale

Detective

Notary-Royal Imogen Hale, the Crown's quest-notary, sent to certify the world-quest's completion and preside over tonight's Adjudication. Precise, cold, carrying the one seal that can open or close the guild's future.…

Tam

Witness

Dawnbreak's cook and, for years, its wagon-master on the quiet supply runs. Feeds three hundred without sitting down. Tonight he burned the roast — first time in a decade — and nobody has seen him smile since the vault…

Wilbrand Crane

Suspect

The guildmaster's ward and named heir: an earnest, over-mannered young man who grew up in the fortress and worships everything Dawnbreak pretends to be. Tonight he inherits either a legend's estate — or a traitor's…

Nix

Character

A licensed quest-appraiser — one of the rare talents who can read the System's hidden metadata off a quest-stone, for a fee. Freelance, cheerfully mercenary, and tonight the most popular person in the hall.

Dree

Suspect

A contract 'carry' hired for the dragon raid — speaks little, eats much, and is owed a fortune. Dree's contract pays per assigned objective, and nothing has been assigned. They have been very patient. They have stopped…

Sarkand

Suspect

The observer sent by the rival Gloamspire Guild 'to honor Dawnbreak's triumph' — a smiling, black-gloved diplomat nobody remembers inviting, with no history anyone can check past three years, who arrived the very day…

Intrigues

  • The Crane InheritanceHeritage

The heir toasts his uncle's legend with a steady hand. Watch the hand.

  • The Credit WarRivalry

One kill. One banner. One purse. 'Shared — Party' satisfies exactly nobody.

  • The Midnight AdjudicationJustice

At midnight the Crown requires a name. One name — or everyone's.

  • The Provisioner's LedgerConspiracy

The reward-vault has opened at last. What it holds is not treasure. It is receipts.

  • The Quest That Wouldn't ClearMystery

The dragon is a week dead. The banner still read 0/1 — until tonight. Somebody in this hall knows why.

  • The Scale Cult's VigilFalse trail

The cultist says the dragon never died — it just changed clothes. He says it is in this room.

  • The Underwriter's GambitMoney

Somebody in this guild bet money on the quest failing. The banner just cost them everything.
