The premise

Ten years ago, seven adventurers went into the Weeping Vault and six came out. The Lantern Company sealed their famous Last Haul, swore a ten-year oath, and built a legend on the comrade they left behind. Tonight, at the reunion in Hallowmere Keep, the vault is to be opened at midnight with every survivor present. But their leader, Corvus Dane, lies dead in the trophy hall behind a door barred from the inside — killed with the lost seventh's own memorial dagger. The seventh chair at the table is pulled out. And it is still warm.

The cast

Corvus Dane

Victim NPC

The Shield of Hallowmere: leader of the Lantern Company, hero of the Weeping Vault, lord of this keep. Found tonight in his own trophy hall behind a door barred from the inside, Fenn's memorial dagger in his chest,…

Maera Voss

Suspect

The Lantern Company's treasurer and quartermaster — the quiet hand that turned loot into land and kept the keep solvent for ten years. Exact, unflappable, trusted with every ledger and most of the keys.

Lady Isolde Dane

Suspect

Corvus's second wife, twenty years his junior, married three years and never warmed to by the company. Under the charter, first in line for a redistribution of shares nobody has yet dared to mention aloud.

Ser Aldric Pale

Suspect

Once the company's blade-master, now Magistrate of the Vale — the law in these hills, in riding boots and a chain of office. His career, his marriage and his statue in the square all stand on the company's clean legend.

Wren Calloway

Suspect

The company's healer, who has spent ten years and a small fortune forgetting the Weeping Vault one glass at a time. She has always said she was the one who voted against sealing the door.

Thaddeus Mirk

Suspect

The company's wizard, gone gray in a tower of his own. His famous campaign spellbook is a relic pilgrims ask to touch — save for one page, razored out, for the day of the Weeping Vault. He says he cut it in grief.

Bram Quill

Suspect

The company's chronicler, whose bestseller 'The Lantern and the Vault' gave Fenn a hero's death and the company its legend. Charming, quotable, and visibly spending an advance he has already spent.

Halla Redfern

Witness

Hallowmere's warden and huntsman — keep staff, not company. She took the trophy hall door off its hinges when no one answered, and she was the first across the floor.

Osric Vane

Suspect

Publisher of 'The Lantern and the Vault' and banker to half the room — he holds paper on the memoir, on the keep's east wing, and on Corvus Dane personally. He arrived for the Unsealing with a strongbox and two clerks'…

Edda Thorne

Witness

Steward of Hallowmere for ten years: keeper of every key, every larder, and the only inventory in this keep that has never flattered anyone.

Kellan Marsh

Suspect

A stranger in a road-stained cloak who walked in uninvited at dusk, carrying a sealed writ and his uncle's jawline. Fenn's nephew, come to lay a blood-price claim against the Lantern Company at the Unsealing.

Seraphine Ode

Detective

Licensed appraiser of the Assayers' Guild, summoned under the charter to value the Last Haul at the Unsealing. Her seal is final, her fee is scandalous, and her verdicts have bankrupted better men than these.

Fenn

Character NPC

The seventh member of the Lantern Company, sealed behind the failing door of the Weeping Vault ten years ago and never recovered. His memory is a memorial case, a portrait, and an empty chair the company still sets at…
