The premise

High on the mountain, the knights of the Sealed Word gather for the Night of Attestation, when every vow is re-sworn beneath a truth-ward that chars a lying tongue. An hour before the rite, High Justiciar Coram Vhale is found dead in the Oathvault — no wound, heart stopped, a shattered vial of heretic venom at his side. Law demands the rite proceed. Twelve souls swear before the god's own ward: 'I did not kill Coram Vhale.' Twelve clean tongues, one dead man. By dawn the order must seat a successor and hand the crown a culprit — armed with nothing but sharper and sharper wordings.

The cast

Coram Vhale

Victim NPC

High Justiciar of the Sealed Word for nineteen years; the order's living conscience, iron and unbought. Found dead in the Oathvault an hour before the rite — no wound on him, his heart simply stopped, a shattered vial…

Seraine Voss

Suspect

Advocatus of the Sealed Word — the order's oath-lawyer. Every vow sworn tonight is her prose. Brilliant, tireless, indispensable, and the first to volunteer whenever a re-swearing needs a wording.

Dagan Mor

Suspect

Knight-Preceptor, thirty years in the order, favorite for the succession. Preaches the ward's infallibility and openly calls tonight's death 'a judgment, not a murder' — half the mountain finds that holy, the other…

Elowen Bray

Suspect

Knight-Commander, the youngest in the order's history, Coram Vhale's protégée. Runs for the succession on retiring the lethal old oaths. She was heard quarreling with the High Justiciar in his study hours before his…

Ilsabet Rune

Witness

Mother Confessor of Vigil Adamant, twenty years. She has heard every sin on this mountain and repeated none. Tonight she is visibly shaken, and everyone wants five minutes of her silence.

Corvin Ashe

Detective

Inquisitor of the Sealed Word, sixteen years. He found the body at a quarter past seven and leads the inquiry by right of office. He has not slept, and it shows.

Hadrik Vane

Suspect

A quiet knight of the border watch, fourteen years of unremarkable loyalty — until tonight, when his attestation came out strangely narrow: 'not by my hand nor by my order.' Everyone noticed. Nobody has stopped noticing.

Brenna Stoke

Suspect

Sister-Quartermaster, twenty-two years — a battle-nun who feeds, arms, and keys the entire chapterhouse. The venom's supposed entry sits in her stores ledger, in what looks like her own handwriting.

Joss Marrow

Suspect

A knight in chains: stripped of arms, convicted, awaiting the High Justiciar's judgment at dawn — under the penitent's total vow of silence. The man with the cleanest motive on the mountain, and the strongest cell.…

Oracle Mirel

Witness

The god's Voice: the sanctum's mute oracle who tends the truth-ward. She answers only yes or no — one bell-strike for yes, two for no — and her office forbids her the pen. The ward's health is her charge, and tonight…

Aurienne Cael

Character

Legate plenipotentiary of the crown, arrived for the election with a small escort and a large seal. By dawn she must witness a lawful succession — or name the mountain crown property. Courteous the way a drawn blade is…

Kelwin Thorne

Suspect

The readmitted exile: excommunicated two years ago by Coram Vhale's own sentence, restored to the order tonight by the rite's mercy. Every eye on the mountain finds him whenever anyone says the word 'infiltrator'.

Brother Osric

Witness NPC

The chapterhouse chirurgeon, a lay-brother of eighteen years — he examined the body, and he also tends the mountain hospice below the pass. Slow hands, slower words, misses nothing.

Intrigues

  • A Wording for Every SinCorruption

Twelve people swore and nobody lied. Ask a better question: who taught them how to swear?

  • The Broken SealFaith

To solve this death you will need the one thing the dead man died refusing to give you.

  • The Crown at the GatePolitics

The crown sent one woman with one seal. Whether you solve this murder may matter less than when.

  • The Deserter's ShadowFamily

One knight swore a very careful oath tonight. Careful oaths are always hiding something. It is not always murder.

  • The Empty VialInvestigation

There was a vial beside the body. The question is not what was in it — the question is who needed you to see it.

  • The Penitent's HourJustice

The man with the best reason to want the judge dead cannot speak. Perhaps someone should ask why the silence suits so many.

  • The Question That Must Not Be AskedFaith

Everything tonight rests on the ward. There is one question about it that must never be asked in the wrong company.

  • The Succession of the Sealed WordPolitics

The order must elect a new High Justiciar at dawn. Both candidates agree on only one thing: the other must not win.
